North Texans can take advantage of new ways to express themselves Thursday as colorful license plate designs launch with prices lowered for the current economy.
The new designs are now on sale with theme choices including western and vintage looks and colors ranging from hot pink to burnt orange. The prices are from $55 to $195 for a one-year plate. You can go online, pick your design, spell your message, and order.
The plate arrives at your county tax office in about three weeks for pick up.
The creative options come from a partnership between The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and My Plates.com. The state receives revenue from the sale of every plate with a guaranteed minimum return of $25 million over five years.
The first company awarded the contract to run My Plates went out of business last year after facing money problems. TxDOT awarded a new contract in August to a joint venture between Pinnacle Technical Resources of Dallas and Etech, Inc. of Nacogdoches.
Tarrant County Tax Assessor-Collector Betsy Price, said North Texans have been very creative in the past, but there are limits.
"You cannot have off-color. The closest thing they've come to off-color is a plate that says TOPLESS and it happens to be on a Mercedes convertible," said Price.
