Baylor Close to Hiring SMU Football Coach Morris: Sources

Sources: Deal to bring SMU football coach Chad Morris to Baylor is "95 percent" done

Sources close to the Baylor athletic program say the university is close to hiring current SMU football coach Chad Morris as their next head coach.

The sources said the deal was agreed upon in principle and they expected it to be finalized this weekend after the Mustangs played their final regular season game Saturday against Navy.

Morris has said his name being mentioned in connection with the Baylor job was “just rumors,” but an SMU source confirmed the report by the Baylor source.

“It is a done deal," the source stated. "Well 95 percent.”

SMU hired Morris, then the offensive coordinator at Clemson, after the Mustangs went 1-11 in 2014. SMU went 7-16 in his two seasons under Morris.

Morris also spent 16 seasons coaching high school football in Texas, winning two straight state championships at Lake Travis High School. His ties to Texas high school football could be great for a Baylor program in desperate need of recruiting help.

Following a 6-0 start under interim head coach Jim Grobe, Baylor has lost four straight games leading into its matchup with Texas Tech Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The Bears final regular season game is Dec. 3 at West Virginia.
