Officials at a San Antonio Air Force base say they have found a small bat colony hibernating in the exterior walls of a basic training dormitory.
The U.S. Air Force Joint Base San Antonio said in a news release Sunday the colony at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland is made up of between 500 and 600 Mexican free-tailed bats, which are common to the region.
The bats were discovered earlier this month and one was caught inside the dormitory. While the bat found in the building tested negative for rabies, the base has been administering immunizations to 205 trainees as a precaution.
Base engineers are working to seal the building's interior, install mesh covers over all interior vents and seal the building's exterior so that bats can exit but not return.
