Barbara Bush Foundation, X Prize Aim to Boost Adult Literacy

The Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy X Prize is generating plenty of interest.

X Prize announced this week that 109 teams from 15 countries are competing for the $7 million prize tied to the former first lady. The goal is to develop mobile software that leads to the greatest increase in adult literacy skills.

Liza McFadden of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy says 36 million adults struggle with low literacy and two-thirds of adults use smartphones. She says the goal is "to put educational tools directly into their hands."

The original X Prize was awarded 12 years ago for privately funded, suborbital flight. Since then, there have been other X Prize competitions aimed at spurring innovation.
