Baby Medevaced from Cruise Ship in Gulf of Mexico

An eight-month-old baby has been evacuated by helicopter from a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico to a Houston hospital.

The Coast Guard said Monday a helicopter crew evacuated the baby girl, her mother and a nurse from the cruise ship Carnival Triumph early Monday some 230 miles southeast of Galveston.

Authorities say the baby was suffering from seizures and trouble breathing.

A Coast Guard flight surgeon agreed with the cruise ship's medical staff that a medical evacuation was necessary.

The aircrew arrived shortly before midnight on Sunday, stopping to refuel at a rig in the Gulf before landing around 2 a.m. at Memorial Hermann hospital in Houston.

The baby's condition was not immediately known.
