Baby in Back Seat During High-Speed Police Chase

Six week old baby discovered at the end of pursuit

Carrollton police released dash board camera and body camera video of a weekend police chase that ended with the arrest of a Plano man.

Gerard Perry, 23, is charged with multiple offenses including felony abandoning and endangering a child.

The pursuit was documented on body cameras which Carrollton police officers wore for the first time.

"He had no regard for the law, no regard for public safety and obviously no regard for his baby's safety," said Carrollton Police spokeswoman Jolene DeVito. "The baby, although in a car seat, was not buckled into that seat."

The incident began on Saturday afternoon when bicycle officers on patrol at Josey Ranch Lake Park saw Perry throw a beer bottle into a wildflower patch, police said. When officers asked for his identification, he got into his car, drove away and nearly hit of one of the officers, according to police.

Perry led police on a chase that reached speeds over 90 mph. Perry ditched his car at a Dallas apartment complex, climbed a fence and ran off, police said.

Officers found Perry hiding inside a restroom at a Starbucks on the 8500 block of Abrams Road.

"This was a man who was willing to hit a police officer. We had no idea there was an infant in the back seat," DeVito said.

An officer comforted the six-week old baby at the apartment complex where Perry abandoned his car, while officers made an arrest.

The officer did not want to be identified.

"He's too camera shy to take any credit for this. If he were standing here he would say, 'I did what any officer would do.' He's one of our veteran patrol officers, a driving instructor and he's a member of our SWAT team," DeVito said. "He's a father himself. It didn't take long for the instinct to kick in and for him to realize the baby needed to be held."
