The officer responded to a report of man firing a gun in the 600 block of Alameda Road at 8:21 p.m. and found a man armed with a handgun, according to a statement released by Azle Police Department Chief Rick Pippins.

Pippins stated that the officer ordered the man to drop the weapon. The man instead advanced toward the officer and pointed the weapon at him, so the officer fired his department-issued weapon and struck the man several times in the torso.

Azle firefighters responded and performed first aid on the man, according to police. The man was then transported by medical helicopter to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:38 p.m.

The identities of the officer and the armed man have not yet been released.

The Texas Rangers will lead in the investigation with help from Azle Police Department investigators and Tarrant County Sheriff's Department crime scene officers.
