Austin Dentist Not at Fault in Toddler Patient Death

A lawyer for an Austin dentist says a state review of the doctor following the 2016 death of a 14-month-old patient has ended with no disciplinary action taken.

Attorney Mike Yanof said Thursday that Dr. Michael Melanson does not face further investigation by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. Yanof said he received a letter from the agency indicating there is not sufficient evidence to proceed over the death of Daisy Lynn Torres.

An autopsy determined the toddler died in March 2016 following complications from anesthesia during treatment for cavities.

A spokeswoman for the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners on Thursday declined to discuss the investigation and said Melanson remains licensed to practice in Texas.

The child's family has sued Melanson and the office where he worked.
