Austin Bans Tubing Along Popular Section of River

The Austin City Council has banned tubing along a popular section of the Colorado River, saying people could be overtaken by high waters from a nearby dam.

The council voted Thursday to ban people from floating down that section of river in a rubber tube after the parks department said water is released from the dam with prior notice.

The Austin American-Statesman reports people with sturdier crafts, such as kayaks, will still be allowed to use that section of river that is between the Longhorn Dam and US 183. Violators will face a fine of up to $500.

The parks department recently reported that there have been 18 water rescues since 2006 along this stretch of water.
