Dallas Police Launch Mall Task Force

Dallas police announced a new task force Wednesday that will try to cut down on crime at Dallas shopping centers this holiday season.

The mission of the Holiday Mall Task Force is to reduce crime in 12 Dallas shopping areas:

North Park Center, Valley View Center, Wynnewood Shopping Center, Southwest Center Mall, Pinnacle Park Shopping Area, Jefferson Corridor/Bishop Arts Shopping Areas, Lancaster/Keist Corridor, Wheatland Shopping Corridor, South Buckner Corridor, Samuell Blvd Shopping District and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Corridor.

Besides observation towers and uniformed patrols, Dallas police will keep an eye on mall parking lots on horseback and by helicopter.

“I think that’s a great idea,” said shopper Marcy Mango. "It makes me feel a lot safer.”

Lisvi Zavaleta said she wishes Dallas police would increase their presence at Valley View Center year round after her GMC Yukon was stolen from the mall's parking lot.

“I rarely see cops around here,” she said. "I’m scared to bring a car here, actually I’m really scared."

The new mall task force is scheduled to start operations Friday and continue through the day after Christmas. The patrols will run from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
