Astrodome Fades, Crumbles as Houston Decides Fate

One option for legendary stadium is demolition

The Harris County Sports and Convention Corp. will recommend a fate for the Astrodome, a building that transformed sports entertainment.

The staff will present the five-member board with its report Wednesday. One option is demolition.

When the Astrodome opened in 1965 it was the envy of other cities. Baseball historians note that it offered luxury seats, plush press boxes and made watching baseball in the heat and humidity of Houston civilized. Legend has it Walt Disney dubbed it the Eighth Wonder of the World.

Many cities built their own domes. But they quickly went out of favor, replaced by the now trendy retractable roof.

Demolition remains the cheapest option, but the corporation has been looking at the possibility of transforming the Astrodome into a multipurpose facility.
