Armed Man, Deputy Wounded in South Texas Shootout

Police say a South Texas sheriff's deputy and a man threatening to kill himself were both injured during an exchange of gunfire on a street Thursday.

Authorities said the Comal County deputy and the man were transported to a hospital following the shootings in Bulverde.

Names of the deputy and the man, as well as details on their conditions, weren't immediately released. Messages left with the sheriff's office and police in Bulverde, 20 miles north of San Antonio, weren't immediately returned Friday.

A police statement said officers attempted to talk to the man for several minutes, while taking cover at times as he walked toward them.

Officers attempted several unspecified tactics, without success, before the man opened fire -- wounding a deputy. Police and deputies returned fire, shooting the man several times.
