Arlington Police Search for Hit and Run Driver in Fatal Moped Wreck

Arlington Police are asking for the public's help to find a hit and run driver who left the scene of a fatal wreck overnight.

It happened at around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of Highway 360 near the Avenue J exit.

Police say a man on a moped tried to switch lanes and ran into a BMW. The impact threw him off his moped and he landed in the road.

A different vehicle then hit him and drove off.

Officials say the driver of the BMW did stop and that person, along with other witnesses, tried to guide traffic around the man until emergency crews arrived.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released, but police say he appears to be in his late 30s.

Investigators do not have a clear description of the vehicle that left the scene.

"We hope that that public may be able to provide some information for our detectives to help locate that person," said Tiara Richard, spokesperson for the Arlington Police Department. "Or if that person sees this news story, they'll come forward and tell detectives what occurred."

If you have any information about this incident, you're urged to call Traffic Investigator Cody Towns at (817) 459-5635.

Some questions have been raised over whether the victim should have taken a moped on a busy highway. Arlington Police tell NBC 5 the particular model he rode is built more like a motorcycle and does meet all Texas guidelines for driving on a highway.
