President Barack Obama will travel to Dallas Tuesday to speak at a memorial for the fallen police officers. He will also meet with their families.
Former President George W. Bush, Mayor Mike Rawlings and Dallas Police Chief David Brown will also deliver remarks, according to a spokesperson for the mayor’s office.
On Monday afternoon, White House staff, the Secret Service, leaders from Dallas and officers from the Arlington Police Department met at the Morgan H. Meyerson Symphony Center, where the memorial is being held to discuss security. Arlington police will handle security for the event. The department’s spokesperson told NBC 5 they offered help to Brown, and he accepted.
"We've turned the responsibility of the security detail for the president to our law enforcement partners. Arlington PD is working with the Secret Service on that and they will be working with any other law enforcement partners we have doing that," Brown said. "I didn’t want my cops having that responsibility because of the fatigue factor. I didn’t want something to go wrong with the president coming here because we’re tired. They volunteered to do it. Appreciate Arlington doing that."
Police are not naming the streets that will be closed because of security reasons, but the Dallas Courts Administrator said downtown street closures could double or even triple.
Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins expects everything to go smoothly.
“You have nothing to worry about coming to the event or being around these areas. This is a very safe place right now,” said Jenkins.
