Arlington Planning Second Dog Park

Dog owners in Arlington are howling with excitement over the city's plans to build a second dog park.

As long as the sun is shining, you'll find Shawn Lawson and his dogs, Piper and Jackson, at the Tails & Trails dog park in southeast Arlington.

"We come out every day," said Lawson. "It's an awesome park for us to come out to and just burn off some energy. The space is incredible."

It was a bit quiet when they pulled up Tuesday afternoon – but Lawson said most days they come, the park is overrun with happy dogs and their owners.

"In the evenings, there's normally 50 to 60 dogs out here," said Lawson.

Arlington Parks & Recreation estimates that approximately 47,000 people bring their pets to the dog park each year.

Given its popularity – and some barking from dog owners for more locations – the city has decided to build a second dog park.

It will be located along Rush Creek, near the intersection of Pioneer Parkway and Valleywood Drive.

"It gives the residents in the west and north part of the city a closer dog park alternative and encourage owners to get out and exercise," said Eric Seebok, park project manager for Arlington Parks & Rec.

At 7-and-a-half acres, the new park will be larger than Tails & Trails. It will have enclosed areas for large dogs and small dogs, an agility course and shaded areas with benches for dog owners.

"I think it's a great idea," said Lawson. "It's perfect for all the dog lovers in the area."

The total cost of the project is $500,000. That money comes from a bond issue that voters approved in 2014.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2016. City officials hope to have it open next fall.
