Changes to the state's immunization requirements mean there will be a few more tears as kids get their back-to-school shots.
The changes mostly affect kindergartners and 7th graders.

Here's a break down:

  • Kindergartners will need two doses of both Hepatitis A and the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine known as MMR
  • Kindergartners and 7th graders will now need two doses of the varicella vaccine instead of just one.
  • All 7th graders will need a TDAP vaccine for tetanus, diptheria, and acellular pertussis. Some other students may need a booster depending on when they last received a tetanus shot.
  • All 7th graders will need a meningococcal vaccine.

Here are a few community events where you can get inexpensive immunizations through local health departments.
