Andrea Yates Seeks Pass to Visit Church

Yates seeks weekly visit to church

A lawyer for a Houston woman who killed her five children says she would like time away from a psychiatrist hospital to attend church.

George Parnham says he expects doctors at Kerrville State Hospital next month to ask a judge for a weekly two-hour pass for Andrea Yates.

Parnham on Tuesday declined to identify the church to the Houston Chronicle.

Prosecutors say Yates in 2001 drowned her children. She was convicted of capital murder and received life in prison.

An appeals court in 2005 overturned the conviction. Yates in 2006 was found innocent by reason of insanity and sent to a mental hospital.

Ex-prosecutor Joe Owmby says laws are in place once the insanity-related decision is made and he's not advocating one way or another in the case.
