American Flight Lands Safely After Engine Issue

An American Airlines flight from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to Las Vegas was forced to land in New Mexico after an engine suffered a "mechanical issue" in flight, officials said.

American Airlines flight 1693 landed safely in Albuquerque with 178 passengers and six crew members shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, an airlines spokeswoman said.

Video taken by a passenger showed what appeared to be flames shooting out from one of the engines of the Airbus A321.

Passengers applauded the crew after the plane landed safely, with firefighters and emergency personnel standing by on the runway.

The Fort Worth-based aircraft apologized to passengers on twitter for the disruption and offered passengers meal vouchers. Customers eventually landed in Las Vegas shortly after 3 a.m. MST.

The Airbus remained in Albuquerque for inspection.
