American Airlines Names First Female Chief Pilot at DFW

American Airlines has named Captain Kathi Durst the chief pilot at its largest hub, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, making Durst the first female chief pilot at DFW airport in the airline's history.

"I'm grateful and I'm humbled that they've chosen me to do this," Durst said.

Durst, 55, is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy where she was part of what was only the second class to admit women.

The daughter of a pilot, she served in the military before being hired at American in 1988.

"You don't know what you're gonna end up doing and what things will change in your life, so I've always been very adventurous, probably by nature, but also because of my father's career traveling around the world," she said.

She is passionate for advocacy of diversity and inclusiveness at American and in the community.

As chief pilot, Durst oversees the pilots based at DFW for American, and she also leads the airline's Boeing 737 pilots.
