Ambulance Crashes, Overturns in Mesquite

A Mesquite Fire Department ambulance ended up on its side Tuesday morning after colliding with a Jeep.

The collision took place along North Belt Line Road near U.S. Highway 80 just after 11 a.m., sending the ambulance over onto its side, shattering the windshield and deploying the airbag.

Officers said the ambulance was running with emergency lights and the siren was activated as it approached the intersection at a red light. As it proceeded through the intersection, the Jeep approached the intersection with a green light and struck the ambulance in the back right side.

Officials said the driver and the passenger in the ambulance were not injured. They were not transporting a patient at the time of the crash. The driver of the jeep was not injured, either.

The southbound lanes of Belt Line Road were closed to traffic for a short time.

What exactly led to the crash is under investigation.
