Allen Homeowners Unhappy About Proposed Gun Range

The city of Allen may soon be getting a new gun range.

A company called Texas Legends wants to build it along U.S. 75 at Curtis Lane, right next to a brand new neighborhood.

Some homeowners aren't happy about it.

Gregory Taggart, Texas Legends’ director of education and training, met Thursday night with people who live near the proposed site.

Some homeowners told NBC 5 they just bought their homes between three and five months ago but would not have if they knew a gun range would be built behind their backyards.

Texas Legends wants to build a 30-lane gun range on an empty lot on the southern corner of the U.S. 75 frontage road and Curtis Lane.

Planning is in the early stages. It has not gone before the city’s planning and zoning board yet.

Homeowners in Quail Run and Ansley Meadows say they’re concerned about safety, increased traffic in their neighborhoods and noise.

“Anybody who’s been to a gun range knows that an indoor gun range you don't hear a lot of noise but it’s still there and it’s noticeable. They tried to tell us it would be quiet and it would blend in with the background noise of the highway but an intermittent popping noise is a lot different than the gentle roar of the highway,” said parent Clif Gaus, who attended the meeting.

“Our range is safe. It’s designed to be safe. We won’t have noise. We're going to have a properly acoustic design,” said Taggart, “We just hope that facts and common sense win out."

Taggart said the company has already invested about $200,000 into the property.

He also said Texas Legends has agreed to not use the word “gun” on any of its signage.

This is not Texas Legends' first run at a gun range.

They tried to build it in Farmers Branch in 2015 but their proposal was denied.
