Airfares Expected to Take Dramatic Dip

Airfare is predicted to drop sharply in August and continue through the fall, according to industry experts.

Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com, says it's normal for airlines to slash fares 15 to 20 percent for travel on or after Aug 25, but some say this year's deals will be better than years past.

"You have a perfect storm. You got kids going back to school. That drops prices down, and you also have the Wright Amendment rolling off last fall, which helps also drop prices, especially on non-stop flights," said Seaney.

"If you're paying over $250 for travel in late August, September, October, you're paying too much for your ticket, and that's basically anywhere in the United States," he added.

Tips from the experts include checking a variety of travel websites frequently and booking one to three months in advance.

"As you get closer, airlines assume your boss is paying and they charge more," said Seaney.
