Pilots at American Airlines are planning a protest for late Wednesday morning, even as there are new indications their union leaders are close to reaching a new tentative agreement with the company.

The pilots said they planed to picket at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport because they're upset with the way they've been treated since a bankruptcy judge allowed American to throw out from the old contract.

In a statement on the Allied Pilots Association's website, the union negotiating committee said: "There is potential for an agreement with AMR in the days ahead, but it all comes down to a number of moves management will need to make on key deal points to bring us into the realm of industry standard."

In response, American Airlines spokesman Bruce Hicks sent a statement saying: "We are approaching a deal that we hope the APA Board of Directors will soon agree to put out for a ratification vote."

The APA Board of Directors begins three days of meetings Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.

The pilots remain the only union group at Fort Worth-based American Airlines without a labor agreement after members rejected the last tentative agreement.
