7-Year-Old Wounded in Mexico Firefight Dies

Authorities in a northern Mexican state bordering Texas say a 7-year-old boy shot this week by a suspected criminal gang has died.

A Tamaulipas state official who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to comment said Thursday that there were complications with Kevin Medina's condition following surgery and he died.

Kevin was riding in a car Tuesday with his father and sister in the border city of Matamoros, across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Texas. Authorities say suspected gang members in a truck saw a military convoy and began firing and trying to escape.

Authorities did not identify what group the shooters may have belonged to, but the area is generally believed to be under the control of the Gulf cartel.
