A mother and her brother, boyfriend and 4-month-old daughter were inside the unit at the Woodlands Apartments in the 1200 block of Castle Gardens Drive in North Arlington when six armed men kicked in the front door just after 10 p.m. Four of the men were wearing masks.

The gunmen demanded "give us everything," according to the woman, but they didn't ask for anything in particular. She didn't recognize any of the men.

The mother — who asked to remain anonymous — quickly took her daughter and hid.

"I ran in the closet and I covered us up with a whole bunch of stuff," she said.

Meanwhile, police said the woman's brother and boyfriend fought off the gunmen. The brother was shot in the leg and the boyfriend was beaten up while the gunmen tried to tie them up. One of the gunmen might have been shot during the struggle.

"My boyfriend refused to get tied up," the woman said. "The gunman struggled with him and beat him up with the gun, and the gun went off."

Neighbors told NBC 5 they heard a lot of screaming, a big ruckus and then about five gunshots.

Arlington police said they still don't know why the gunmen broke into the apartment. They have not made any arrests.

The woman said her boyfriend and brother were transported to a nearby hospital and later released.

Arlington police said a person who resembled the description of one of the gunmen was dropped off at Arlington Memorial Hospital at about 10:25 p.m. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transported by air ambulance to another hospital.

NBC 5's Jeff Smith contributed to this report.
