Public Artwork Displays Special Meaning for Irving Residents

The number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease is expected to more than double by the 2060, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Advocates said early detection is key to better outcomes and that means raising more awareness about the disease.

A unique exhibit in Irving is doing just that.

Residents at The Villages on MacArthur take part in the Memories in the Making fine arts program, designed for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia.

Using an “inspiration” picture, the person with dementia is asked to paint their impression of the picture inspiration, while trained volunteers write down the comments, cues and memories the artists shares during painting.

Memories in the Making has the potential to awaken those moments, thought to be lost, and bring them to life through the hand and memory of the artist.

For the first time in Dallas-Fort Worth, the artwork from the program is on display in a public exhibit.

"Having a beautiful exhibit like this really brings an awareness to the community in a way that shines a beautiful light on the resources that are available," said Kathy Shockley, with the Alzheimer's Association chapter of Dallas, Northeast Texas.

The artwork is on display at the Irving Arts Center through Sept. 30.
