Heavy rains forced an estimated 399,000 gallons of partially treated domestic wastewater to overflow into Rowlett Creek over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to a North Texas Municipal Water District spokesperson.
The overflow at the Rowlett Creek Regional Wastewater plant came to a stop at about midnight Sunday morning.
Environmental tests were set to begin, but no environmental impact was anticipated, a district statement said.
Public drinking water "continues to be safe for consumption and use from treatment at NTMWD's water treatment facilities," Tom Kula, NTMWD executive director, said in the statement.
People who use private drinking wells within a half mile of the spill site, or near the creek, should boil water for at least one minute. The district asked for the public to stay away from soil or water effected by the spill.
