300 Dogs Rescued from Squalid Texas Kennel

About 300 large-breed dogs have been seized from a West Texas kennel after officials found them living in poor, filthy conditions.

KCBD-TV of Lubbock reports Floyd County deputies served a warrant to remove the dogs from Mark and Sandra Smith's kennel in Lockney after they refused to turn them over.

Sandra Smith told the station that she had been "raising and showing quality German shepherds for 40 years." She denied running a puppy mill, but said her operation "outgrew us in a big way."

Still she said the problems were correctable and that authorities overreacted.

However, Sheriff Paul Raissez says deputies found feces-covered floors, dirty water bowls and fly-covered food.

No charges have been filed, but the Smiths go to court Oct. 3 to seek the return of the dogs.
