Witnesses told police that three armed men shot the two victims as they chased them around the Bent Tree apartments in the 9000 block of Brian Way Circle at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

"We believe the victims ran through the apartment complex," Fort Worth Police Department spokesman Lt. R.L. Krouse said. "We cordoned off a large area to make sure we didn't miss any evidence."

One shooting victim — later identified as 23-year-old Eleaquin Cardona — died after being taken to John Peter Smith hospital. The other victim — an unidentified 21-year-old man — was treated at the scene and refused transport to a hospital.

Witness Patty Garner told NBC 5 she heard four or five gunshots, people running through the apartments and screaming.

"[The shots] were real close together," she said. "You could hear somebody just keep on firing."

Garner said her neighbor's car window was shot out and a bullet went into a carseat in the back. She said she's scared for the safety of her two grandchildren.

“It’s scary because those bullets could have strayed and went into anyone’s apartment here and killed someone," she said. "And that’s what’s scary with these random firings."

Police said they think attempted robbery was the motive. It's unclear if the victims knew their attackers. [[308167561,C]]
