3 Carrollton Homes in 8 Days Hit by Drivers Suspected of DWI

For the third time in eight days, a vehicle driven by someone suspected of intoxicated driving struck a home Sunday night, Carrollton police said.

When officers arrived at the home in the 1600 block of Cecil Drive, they found a blue pickup truck had plowed through the garage and part of the house.

"This guy thought that he was trying to avoid hitting a dog running in front of his vehicle," police spokeswoman Nicole Rodriguez said.

After a field sobriety test, Scott Choate was arrested on suspicion of DWI and on open container, Rodriguez said.

The case was a bit of déjà vu for the department.

"This is the third incident we've had in eight days," Rodriguez said. "It isn't common. It's a little odd to have three of them in such a short span."

On June 15, a car went into the front of a home in the 1900 block of Castille Drive. On Wednesday, a white pickup went into the front bedroom of a house on East Peter's Colony Road.

In both cases, the drivers, Kevin Lay and John White, respectively, were arrested on DWI charges.

Both neighborhoods are still cleaning up the mess left behind.

Rachel Taylor, whose yard and mailbox were hit by the car in the first incident before it ended up hitting her neighbor's home, said she still trying to figure out how to deal with the damage.

"We are shocked," she said. "It was terrible, it was horrible, scared the bejesus out of me."

Taylor, whose house sits on the corner of two cross streets, said she fears it could happen again. She is adding large rocks to her front yard to slow down any out-of-control vehicles in future.

"My front yard should be safe. My home should be safe," she said. "I don't know how people could be so irresponsible, you know? People aren't thinking about the consequences of anybody else but themselves."

The police said they hope the disturbing trend won't continue.

"You need to not drink and drive," Rodriguez said. "I mean, it's causing a lot of damage. Besides people wrecking your life by going to jail and having that on your record ... in these cases, it's causing a lot of damage to people's personal property."
