An abandoned church in southeast Fort Worth has been heavily damaged in a three-alarm fire Tuesday evening.[[389013682, R]]

Nobody was in the building and there are no reported injuries at the Christian Tabernacle church located on the 3500 block of Avenue I, near Little Street.

The fire was reported before 8 p.m. and responding firefighters reported large flames and heavy smoke, so the firefighters moved to defensive operations, according to the Fort Worth Fire Department.

The additional alarms were called due to the size of the structure, the fire conditions and the hot temperatures. Even as the sun was setting Tuesday, the temperature at Fort Worth Meacham Airport was 97 degrees.

Additional information about the fire have not yet been released.

Fire department investigators are trying to determine how the fire was started, and investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also called to the scene.
