Heavy flames caused a roof to collapse at a Northwest Dallas apartment complex Friday afternoon, fire crews say.[[377617101,C]]
The fire started at about 1:45 p.m. at the Carrollton Park Apartments in the 18000 block of Kelly Boulevard.
When firefighters first arrived, they saw a little show coming from a three-story apartment building. The smoke quickly evolved into flames shooting through the roof, which caused it eventually collapse.
Approximately 60 firefighters battled the blaze.
Shortly after the fire was out, a second-floor balcony collapsed to the ground.
Jason Evans with Dallas Fire-Rescue said a maintenance worker was doing hot work repairs to a water line that connected to the ice maker of a refrigerator in one of the units. The torch set fire to the wall insulation and paper backing and then spread up the wall and into the attic, causing severe fire loss to the structure and contents of three apartments.
One of the workers sustained minor injuries while trying to extinguish the fire. He was treated by medics on the scene.
