2010 Raid Underscores Deeper Demographic Questions

In 2010, investigators working for Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott's office and suspecting election fraud raided the headquarters of a group called Houston Votes.

A year later, the investigation was closed with no charges filed. But Houston Votes never recovered. Its efforts to register low-income voters stalled permanently.

Aides to Abbott, now favored to win the governorship in November, say the previously unreported raid was part of an effort to preserve the integrity of Texas elections.

But the Dallas Morning News reports that Abbott's critics contend the raid may be part of an official, partisan effort to suppress voters who don't support Republicans.

The case underscores just how important voter registration and turnout will be amid Texas' shifting demographics that would seem to favor future Democratic candidates.
