2 Motorcycle Officers Injured in Crash on I-35E

Northbound Interstate 35E at Clarendon Drive in Dallas was shut down Tuesday afternoon because of a crash involving two Dallas police motorcycle officers.

According to Dallas police, Senior Cpl. Wayne Nichols and Senior Cpl. Michael Keating were traveling north on R.L. Thorton Freeway when the driver of a car swerved suddenly to avoid colliding with a vehicle in front of him in a construction zone. Police said the car hit Nichols and forced him into Keating.

Both officers went down.

Keating was transported to Methodist Hospital in Dallas, while Nichols was transported to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.

Both officers appear to have non life-threatening injuries, police said. They both were talking and alert Tuesday night, Assistant Chief Charles Cato said.

Keating and Nichols are surrounded by loved ones and fellow officers at the hospital. Keating's wife is with him. Nichols' wife is with him, along with his brother.

A driver in a Toyota Camry was also transported to an area hospital. Her injuries were also not considered life-threatening.

Police have said it's too early to say if the driver will face any charges in connection with the crash.

"The investigation is early on, where it's too early to determine whether the driver of the other private vehicle is going to face any charges or not," Cato said. "It appears that, at least at this point, it was an accident."

Traffic on the highway was stopped for a short time, but the roadway has since reopened.

The Texas Department of Transportation said the construction effort was part of a highway lighting project.

NBC 5's Ellen Goldberg & Ken Kalthoff contributed to this report.
