2 Dead in West Texas Wrong-Way Wreck

Two people have been killed and another critically injured in a head-on collision after one vehicle went the wrong way on a West Texas highway.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Bryan Witt says 62-year-old Patricia Mendez of Anton and her 8-year-old granddaughter were dead at the scene Monday along U.S. 84 about 25 miles northeast of Lubbock.

Witt says 51-year-old Jeffrey Howard of Wolfforth was driving an SUV west in the roadway's eastbound lanes when the head-on collision occurred. Witt says 911 calls to police resulted in an officer trying to catch up to the wrong-way driver. The accident occurred before the officer could intervene.

Witt says Howard was taken to a Lubbock hospital in critical condition. His condition was later upgraded to satisfactory.

The accident investigation is ongoing.
