119th Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is Open

Fort Worth is ready for 23 days of 'Stock Show Strong'

The 119th Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo got underway Friday at the Will Rogers Memorial Center.

The annual gathering of junior exhibitors, professional ranchers and the community kicks off with events starting at 8 a.m. and the opening of the midway carnival at 4 p.m. Several events have already taken place at the various arenas, as the 23-day long stock show kicks into gear.

“I show paint stock horses, and so I just wanted to come in and watch the classes and see what I can learn,” said Sylvia Gillen, who attended Thursday’s Ranching Heritage Challenge.

Education and celebration is really what the Stock Show is all about. It provides a chance for children to learn about the agriculture industry and get college scholarships, too.

“We have a record 29,000 entries this year. We’ll have well over 11,000 junior exhibitors from all across the state of Texas. I think that covers 237 counties that will be represented here,” said Shanna Weaver, publicity manager for the show.

The Stock Show also features shopping, food, the nightly rodeos and celebrating cowboy culture.

“There’s so much pride and tradition and heritage wrapped up in this show,” Weaver said.

The show runs through Feb. 7 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. More than a million people are expected to attend over the three-plus weeks of activities.
