Under Crandall's direction, American revolutionized how tickets were priced and sold and created one of the world's first frequent flier programs.
Today in retirement, Crandall is a sharp and informed critic of much of what's happening in the industry he used to lead. He has argued that the government should reregulate airlines, and he's spoken out against the megamerger strategy that has created a smaller number of giant airline companies.
