100 Dallas Families Receive Thanksgiving Help

Kroger & Oak Lawn church adopt Dallas elementary school.

Dozens of Dallas families are looking forward to a better Thanksgiving. A Dallas church made it possible at a very emotional event.

The day at Oak Lawn United Methodist Church started with people bringing groceries inside.

Turkeys, stuffing, rolls and other items were placed into bags by parishioners.  Church members adopted 100 families from nearby Medrano Elementary School to fill gift bags full of food.

Parishioners also got something out of it.

"Just to give back.. help out people, times are hard for everyone," said church member Martha Bellomy, as she wiped away tears.  She remembers when her family was in need of help.

"During these times, our church was very gracious and helped us, so this brings back a lot of memories," Bellomy said.

Families who received the meals were just as grateful and emotional.

"It's (pausing for tears) awesome," parent Alma Baltazar said. "Because my husband and I have been going through a rough situation. [He] got laid off and this [is] really helping us out to pay the bills and enjoy Thanksgiving."
