10-Year-Old Killed in Drunken-Driving Crash

Police said a 10-year-old boy died Friday morning of injuries sustained in a late-night crash in South Arlington.

Investigators said 10-year-old Tavian Sabur was in his mother's car when it was struck by a sport utility vehicle on Petra Drive, just blocks from their home.

"A driver in an SUV was headed west on Nathan Lowe, failed to stop at the stop sign, came to the intersection and collided with that vehicle carrying the mother and son," police spokeswoman Tiara Richard said.

Walter Tendai Chidtausiku, 29, is charged with two counts of intoxication assault.

"The driver of the SUV that came into the intersection and caused this crash did not have any serious injuries, but early on, investigators determined that the driver appeared to be intoxicated."

Police said more charges could be filed.

Tavian Sabur died Friday morning at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth. His mother is recovering from her injuries.

Arlington police said they hope drivers will think twice before getting behind the wheel if they have been drinking.

"Our officers will be out in force this weekend," Richard said. "We already had increased enforcement planned for the Labor Day holiday weekend, and so we're hoping that people will hear the unfortunate story of the child and think twice when they get behind the wheel after drinking."
