1 Year Since Major Hail Storm Hit North Texas

It may be hard to believe but this Friday marks one year since a major hail storm ripped through North Texas.

On April 3, 2014, three waves of hail and high winds hit the area near University Drive in Denton at around dinner time, breaking windows, totaling cars and causing lasting scars from which the community is still cleaning up.

Several cars at Texas Woman’s University still have hail damage, and school leaders report they’re still fixing roof damage on some buildings, as are their neighbors at the University of North Texas.

And Denton body shops report they’re still working through back-logs of vehicles that were damaged in the storm.

Many organizations like Denton’s colleges don’t even have final price tags on all their damage yet due to the ongoing repairs, but our partners at the Denton Record Chronicle report the final tally from the Insurance Council of Texas to be at $850 million for the city, with about $500 million of that coming from home damage.

Denton County Emergency Management Coordinator Jody Gonzalez said last week that the 2014 hail storm and the return of spring weather this year is a reminder to prepare for severe weather season.

He urges residents to invest in weather radios and sign up for phone and text alerts through systems like Code Red.
