1 Killed in Princeton House Fire; Cause Under Investigation

Investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that killed one person Monday night in Collin County.

The fire was reported at about 8:30 p.m. on the 200 block of Willow Lane in Princeton.

"I was actually scared because I was thinking the fire was going to come this way," said neighbor Emma O'Brien.

Firefighters extinguished the flames, and then during a secondary inspection of the home they found a body inside.

The person's identity has not been released, and several agencies – including the Princeton Fire and Princeton Police Departments, Texas Rangers and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – are investigating the cause.

The fire appeared to have started in the garage or utility room, investigators said.

More than a day after the fire, investigators continued combing through the scene for clues into how the fire started.

Tuesday night, the medical examiner's office removed the remains. They will determine the identity.

Officials said more than one person lived in the home, and they know that the homeowner was not the person who died.

"The homeowner was accounted for initially upon arrival of the first arriving units," said Princeton Fire Chief Thomas Harvey.

The homeowner is being considered a person of interest and he is cooperating, Harvey said.

A police officer will remain at the home overnight to make sure it isn't disturbed.

The investigation could take three days, Harvey said.
