1 Killed, 1 Hurt in Crash of Homebuilt Texas Plane

One person has been killed and a second injured when a homebuilt, single-engine plane crashed at a private airfield in Southeast Texas.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford says it's not clear what caused the unregistered plane to crash late Saturday afternoon near Shepherd. Witnesses told law enforcement that the craft struck a stand of trees at the end of a runway.

KPRC-TV in Houston reports that the pilot of the plane died in the wreck and the passenger suffered multiple fractures.

Lunsford says the FAA is investigating and that the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified.

The San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office declined to release information on the wreck.
