1 Dead, 1 Injured After Man Crashes Into Parked Van

Police said one man is dead and another is injured after a driver fled from an officer and crashed into a parked car in Plano Wednesday morning.

Plano Police Department spokesman Officer David Tilley said officers responded to a call about a fight involving at least four people at an apartment complex in the 7300 block of Alma Drive at about 4 a.m.

When officers arrived, they saw a vehicle leaving. They pulled the vehicle over and talked to the driver, who police said appeared to be intoxicated.

During the stop, police said the driver sped away at speeds faster than 100 mph and lost the officer. Another patrol vehicle came to assist and found the vehicle, which had crashed into an unoccupied van and a dumpster in a parking lot near the intersection of Alma Drive and Cross Bend Road.

"Apparently he was going at a high rate of speed, because he hit the van and dumpster, a pretty large dumpster, all the way to the roadway," Tilley said.

Police said they found two people in the car. The passenger, 24-year-old Kevin Lloyd Smith-Franklin, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, also in his 20s, was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Tilley said the wreck damaged the Small Miracles Academy at 3912 Alma Drive, forcing the facility to close for the day.
