A North Texas community is in mourning after the deaths of two young children. Police in Wills Point said the children were riding a toy ATV not far from their home, when they apparently fell into a creek and drowned on Saturday evening.

While being watched by their grandmother, 4-year-old Dakylie Hamilton and 3-year-old Dashawn Hamilton apparently slipped out of sight for just a few minutes. When their grandmother couldn't find the children she called 911.

A half-hour later, the children were found unconscious in the creek. They were rushed first to a local hospital and then to Children's Medical Center Dallas where they were pronounced dead.

Wills Point Police Chief Scott Johnson told the Dallas Morning News the water in the creek was only about 2 feet deep and that the children had been pulled from the water by the time police arrived.

"They are the sweetest people and we are just asking everybody to pray for this family because we just lost two little angels," said Julie Lyons, neighbor. "They're grieving. Their hearts are heavy and we're just asking everyone to pray for them."

Neighbors said everyone who met the brother and sister fell in love with them. The pair were inseparable and they were always seen running around the neighborhood with smiles on their faces.

"They just loved to play. They'd play from sun up to sun down," said Lyons. "It’s touched our whole community. When you lose a child, you lose a little bit of yourself."

Police are investigating the deaths but said the incident appears to be nothing more than a tragic accident.

NBCDFW's Frank Heinz contributed to this report.
