This morning Tom Schieffer, who like many other rumored gubernatorial candidates has beaten around the bush for months, will finally launch his official campaign for the Democratic nomination for governor of Texas.

He will make the announcement outside of Luella Merrett Elementary School in his hometown, Fort Worth, at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Shieffer, who drew some ire for running as a Democrat despite his friendship with former president George W. Bush and service on his cabinet, has already gained the endorsement of the Texas Association of Hispanic County Judges and County Commissioners, a group impervious to general tacit limits on lengthy titles and oddly Web site-less.

Perhaps as an x-diplomat he would be able to unite the two main parties between which a rift currently exists and stand a chance at winning.

After his visit to Luella Merrett, he will be a busy man, hitting up Houston and Austin in the same day to “discuss issues important to him and other Texans,” according to the press release.

The Texas Lyceum Poll released Wednesday also found many Texans aren't paying much attention to next year's elections yet. On the Democratic side, 80 percent of those polled were undecided, but humorist Kinky Friedman had 10 perecent, followed by former ambassador Schieffer.
