Doctors say a 2-year-old girl who nearly drowned in a backyard pool has made a miraculous recovery.

Makayla Mayes fell into the pool Wednesday night at her home in Lowry Crossing, just east of McKinney.

Her mother, Brittany Mayes, said her daughter was in the living room before somehow getting through a childproof gate and out the door.

Mayes said finding her daughter floating in the pool was terrifying.

"It was cold outside," she said. "The water was cold. I wasn't shaking, I wasn't crying; I was just in shock."

Mayes said her father helped save his granddaughter's life. He began CPR after she jumped in and pulled the toddler out of the pool.

"He's getting a big head about it, because we keep calling him our hero," Mayes said.

Doctors at Children's Medical Center in Dallas told Mayes that they had never seen a child recover from a near drowning so quickly. She was awake and running around the hospital three days after the incident and was back home by Sunday.

"I’m so thankful," Mayes said. "All we keep saying -- me and my dad, we talked last night -- is, 'God must have big plans for her.'”

Mayes said she has removed the childproof gate in her home and has begun to build a fence around the backyard patio and pool.
