The Dallas Stars said they are losing millions of dollars at the Dr Pepper Stars Center in Duncanville and that they want to close the facility.
More than 300 residents crowded a town hall meeting to discuss the closure and the Stars decided to rethink the closure.
They appealed to the city for a rent reduction, even though they would still be operating with a loss if approved, but the city declined and said the Stars failed to market the Duncanville center as they had other locations throughout the Metroplex.
Next week, the city will vote on whether or not to accept a $2 million fee that will release the Stars from their contract and allow them to shut down the facility.
The Duncanville Stars Center opened in 2000 and provides hockey lessons and leagues, figure skating, curling and speed skating on two sheets of ice.
There are now six Dr Pepper Stars Centers throughout DFW, the newest is in McKinney and celebrates its grand opening on Sept. 19.
