The father of fallen Lancaster police officer Craig Shaw said he wishes it would have been him. "I lived most of my life, it hurts me that he didn't get to live his," Lee Shaw said from his home in Southeast Dallas.
The elder Shaw last heard from his son Sunday morning, when Officer Shaw called to wish him a Happy Father’s Day before going into work. That was the last conversation Shaw would ever have with his son.
Several hours later, a police chaplain was sitting in their living room. "My wife, she went to pieces, and I’m thinking, he’s dead, what happened?" said Lee Shaw.
Investigators believe the son and namesake of Dallas' Police Chief, David Brown, Jr., shot officer Shaw, a married father of two, in the head. Shaw died at the scene.
"I don't blame Chief Brown for what happened, sometimes our children make bad decisions," Shaw said.
As a father, he said he feels for Chief Brown and his family. "Chief Brown didn't kill my son, he lost a son and he is going through what I’m going through now," said Lee Shaw.

The 63 year-old father and grandfather said he is trying to stay strong for his son's widow and his own wife, who aren't taking it as well. "My wife, she breaks down, and doesn’t want to accept it, she wants to wake up and it be over with." said Lee Shaw.
A communitywide prayer vigil has been scheduled for Wednesday at 9 a.m. The Lancaster Interdenominational Ministrial Alliance (LIMA) will hold the prayer vigil at First United Methodist Church at 201 S. Dallas Ave.
A candlelight vigil will be held Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Lancaster Public Safety Facility at 1650 North Dallas Ave.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at The Inspiring Body of Christ Church (IBOC) at 7701 South Westmoreland Rd. in Dallas.
A trust fund has been set up for Shaw's children and family at Chase Bank. Donations can be made to the Craig Shaw Trust Fund at any Dallas-Fort Worth location.
