The lights are shining brightly again along Dallas' Katy Trail. “The lights are on!” said Eric Paulson with the Friends of the Katy Trail said.

Last week, thieves stripped the copper wire from 12 lights along the southern end of the trail, leaving runners and cyclists out in the dark.

“Safety is a big concern to me,” runner Kelly Beeman said. “I usually don’t come out here when it’s dark by myself.”

But now, thanks to Balfour Beatty, Prism Electric and Graybar International, women like Beeman can walk with a little more confidence along the trail. The companies joined forces to install 7,000 feet of new copper line at no charge to the city or the non-profit group that maintains the trail.

“These companies and individuals came forward and donated their time and their supplies,” Paulson said. “It’s just a great thing.”

With the new lights, people NBCDFW spoke with said they can exercise with a renewed sense of security.

“Having them fixed will be a nice feeling,” Beeman said.

Katy Trail officials said the new lights are equipped with tamper resistant plates, which makes it much tougher for the thieves to remove the copper.
