Mega Millions Reaches $237 Million

Happy New Year could be on tap

A one-dollar investment Friday night might just mean one helluva happy New Year for some-lucky-body.

The Mega Millions big jackpot — and aw, look, the website includes a photo of a hand dropping a penny and a dime into a piggy bank for "retirement;" how quaint — reached $237 million, with the Mega Ball, after Tuesday night’s drawing failed to turn up a big winner. Roll it over to the New Year’s Eve drawing and the prize now carries a cash-option jackpot of $150.8 million.

Don’t go counting the money just yet. The lottery hasn’t produced a winner from the last 14 of its semiweekly rounds, so this isn’t easy. People in 41 states plus the District of Columbia spin that big wheel, too, which makes the odds a bit longer than the state version.

The potential consolation prize ain’t too shabby, though. According to an Associated Press report, “17 players in a dozen states won at least $250,000 each by matching five of the six winning numbers.” Worth a shot.

What if you were to win? Would you show up to work Monday? And not just to gloat. Keep it classy.
